Villa D'Este View

The Villa d’Este is an Italian Renaissance villa and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. If you happen to visit Rome, you absolutely cannot miss Villa D’Este and its wonderful gardens.

Villa D’Este, is located in Tìvoli which is an Italian town of 53 988 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Rome, Lazio.
It is a unique experience to visit the villa with its decorated and painted interiors and its gardens, the best part of this entire estate. Its terraces and slopes connect different parts of the garden using a typical Roman architectural scheme.

HISTORY

The villa was commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito d’Este, on a site that was already the site of a Roman villa in ancient times.
The work was entrusted to the architect Pirro Ligorio, assisted by an impressive number of artists and craftsmen.
In 1918, after the World War I, Villa D’Este passed to the Italian State which began major restoration work, restoring it in its entirety in the years 1920-1930 and opening it to the public.

VILLA AND ITS GARDENS

The Villa d’Este complex in Tivoli is one of the most remarkable and refined examples of Renaissance culture. The Villa has one of the first wonder gardens, served as a model and had a decisive influence on the development of gardens in Europe.
The complex, consisting of the palace and the garden, was built by Pirro Logorio on behalf of the Ferrarese Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este who, having become governor of the city of Latium in 1550, wanted a residence suited to his new status.

The garden of Villa d’Este extends along steep slopes that descend from the palace to a flat terrace in the manner of an amphitheater. Each of the five main transversal axes of the garden ends in a fountain. This arrangement of axes and modules was adopted to hide the irregular shape of the garden.
Most importantly, the garden of fountains constitutes a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering, both for the general conception of the system and for the complexity of the distribution system and the realization of the multiple water games, with the introduction of the first hydraulic automata in Italy.
